About me

My name is Dr Matthew Johnston, I am a kiwi trained Geriatrician and General Physician. I currently work a full time job in Palmerston North Hospital as an acute hospital physician. I grew up in the Manawatū and have returned home after completing my training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

I chose to pursue two specialties that encouraged broad clinical experience, with emphasis on the ability to consider the whole of the patient rather than specific organs or medical conditions. In the public hospital my interest is in acute medical care, both in the young and elderly. I have expertise working in inter-disciplinary teams, and have found this very rewarding with respect to improving the quality of life of people under my care.

In private medical practice my focus is in complex medical care, prioritising quality of life and function by optimising management of multiple medical conditions or comorbidity. My primary goals are to enable people to understand their health situation, and navigate a path forward in their health journey in conjunction with their primary care team.
